These trend graphs would be easier to read if the arrows got thicker or thinner toward the heads, rather than simply being the same thickness all along but with an arrowhead on one end.

That is an amazing chart! My one gripe with it is that the axes are the wrong way around for the (assumed) thesis: this way it implies declining fertility rate drives increased life expectancy, rather than the other way around...

Density function on the color intensity as a function of time is pretty neat too If your plot is going on the web rather than static you can also run a sweep along each vector which lets you get somw more data crammed in there
