The best writers understand the importance of owning a phrase on the internet, one their fans can rally around. The most iconic: * “Do things that don’t scale” @paulg * “It’s time to build” @pmarca * “100 true fans” @ljin18 * “Tools for networked thought” @Conaw What else?

That suggests that this can be done on purpose, but it can't. It's very unpredictable which phrases people will adopt as rallying cries. The best plan is just to say what you want to say as clearly as possible.

What keeps us from massive a/b testing this on sale? Actually... Now that I think about it. Sounds a bit like a problem, that machine learning could help with.

The popularity of these phrases is probably as much a function of the writers’ reputations as it is of the actual words.

A good phrase is like a good software feature. You never know which one will take off, but when you begin noticing that it’s “catching on,” don’t be afraid to tweak it and then actively promote it.

Please don't lol. Not doing that is a supremely respectable trait of Paul G. A lesser writer would have turned many of his essays into standalone books "Do Things that Don't Scale", "Make Something People Want", "Why Nerds are Unpopular (in the self help category)", etc.

Often when you’ve thought about something very deeply you can find simple ways to explain complex ideas. And its that simplification in and of itself that can become popular if the complex idea/problem becomes popular too. Do you agree?
