What surprised me about visiting historical places in Europe was how small many of the rooms are. The only large rooms were cathedrals and an armory. We take it for granted today that rooms can be big; this photo of a great hall reminded me of that.

According to Steckel's analysis, heights decreased from an average of 68.27 inches (173.4 centimeters) in the early Middle Ages to an average low of roughly 65.75 inches (167 cm) during the 17th and 18th centuries. People also slept sitting up so beds seem small.
