Given how broad your audience is now, have you thought about sending your first draft of essay to a small group of people with diverse backgrounds to get a finger to the wind reading on how it might be interpreted across differing groups?

I'm not so much concerned with whether an essay will be popular as whether it's correct, so I usually just pick the smartest people I can think of.

Even more reason. This implies that learning more about most other types of privilege can be overcome just by learning and in one conversation. That is incorrect.pic.twitter.com/LGgElDYlzY

I am surprised by this answer. I don't believe the notion of "correctness" to be particularly applicable to essays. Do you mean "correct" not for the essay as a whole, but in a narrower sense, such as particular citations of facts, assumptions or logical progression of arguments?

In http://paulgraham.com/useful.html  you argue that essays should be useful, which requires telling the reader the truth "as unequivocally as possible". Doesn't "unequivocal" imply that an essay that reduces misinterpretation is strictly better than one that doesn't, all else being equal?

Also, I don't see how trying to minimizing misinterpretation implies the author wants their writing to be more popular or that they'll get it if they pull it off. Many statements _rely_ on misinterpretation for popularity, e.g., dog whistles.

Surely it should be possible to optimize for both? What's the point in being correct if it fails to actually enlighten people due to some silly miscommunication or poor branding?https://web.archive.org/web/20190430131245/http://measureofdoubt.com/2012/06/11/be-a-communications-consequentialist/ …

What about perceptual bias? Those you consult with may engage in good thinking, but avenues explored when reasoning are influenced by experience, which breeds perspective. If the perspectives consulted all cluster then you may be missing deeper truths that generalize better
