the existence of that thing was what allowed me to build SaaS search company. I am deeply thankful for the Google Search Appliance, I wouldn't be where I am without it.

I didn't use it. Its existence allowed me to create a much more convenient alternative that seemed ridiculously cheap in comparison. $50k for the appliance was a really high upfront cost. $500 or $1000 a month for our offering was cheap.
