Counterintuitive as it sounds, I'm always encouraged when I publish a new essay and get showered with insults. Showered = lots of people saw it, and insults = there were no big mistakes in it for them to refute.

I write a weekly newsletter and have never received an insult. Now I feel like a failure.
You wouldn't get them so much with a newsletter because everyone has signed up to receive those. The people who freak out about essays tend to be those who follow people who follow you, but don't follow you.
