What is your formula for clear thinking? Because obviously you're (have been) doing it right in all your writings (The one's I've read so far). How do you do it?
One way is by successive approximations. Write something down, then ask if it's right, and if it's not, keep changing it till it is. This way you don't have to be smart enough to get something right the first time, just smart enough to notice what's wrong with each iteration.

It’s like Newton’s Method for ideation. Now that you mention it, it’s hard to imagine another way!

This is also a reason why it’s helpful to be critical but not dismissive of others’ ideas. The approximation that misses might be onto something.

Nice! I think this is mentioned in one of your blog posts that made it into the book. What about the case when one's iterating only to approach some local maxima instead of a global one? People are blinded by their own view of the world after all.

Jim Keller (computer architect) said an architecture should be remade from scratch every 5 years with iteration in the betweens. It’s expensive to remake, but it prevents oversqueezing the lemon near a local max.
