I'm not saying they won't make money, just that people won't care so much what they write. As recently as 2005 or 2010 it was a huge deal if the NYT wrote about something. Their opinions carried weight. That is already far less true.

What plays a bigger role in that: 1) an uptick of examples to not trust the NYT 2) a media environment with more options

controversial opinion here: for-profit companies exist to make money in the short and long term if perceived reputational damage doesn't impact the latter, it doesn't matter

True. I sub & read NYT 100% only for its business/tech sections. The rest incl opinion which I used to read, just don’t care that much.

I like the reporting on science, culture, and major national news. The oped section is where it feels like they’ve declined in influence and could be something much more interesting than it is today. The section needs to be overhauled
