We live in scary times if you read this as "Newspaper of record taken over by ideologues." But a newspaper of record taken over by ideologues stops being one. So all it really means is "The NYT is becoming irrelevant." Which is unfortunate, but not scary.

@waitbutwhy means it as an example of yet another institution that’s been overtaken by ideologies. A single entity ain’t scary, dozens of bedrock institutions sure as hell are -
there are bedrock institutions from a hundred years ago that we never hear about except in the history books if even that.
