Surely some part of this must also be the increasing power of the consumer (both as an individual & a collective). Mobs don't have much sway when all important business is Enterprise-to-Enterprise. But now a great deal of economic purchasing power has been democratized!

People compare it likes it's a 2x difference. "We had mobs before the internet". But the difference is exponential. Instead of the person in the next town being angry you now have someone on the other side of the world trying to get you fired.
