I agree, and wonder (I've asked before): 1) Does this represent a marked, total deterioration in American mental health, across the board; 2) or is this an artefact of Twitter, in that crazy people fascinate sane ones (for many reasons) and thus go viral faster?https://twitter.com/thomaschattwill/status/1280983881345314817 …

Crazy is hard to define, and especially hard to disambiguate from "a really unpleasant and obnoxious person who's got repulsive political opinions." Nonetheless, craziness is a real phenomenon, not just an epithet.
-
Whatever "crazy" is, it is always found close to propaganda, conspiracy, lies, deceit, outrage, hate, disgust and phobias all of which are richly rewarded with $$$$$$ on social media.

Whatever it is, it is extremely profitable to amplify the very worst, most dangerous, most lurid and sickening material. That's the main issue with Twitter and Social Media: truth is boring and doesn't sell. Lies, propaganda, porn and outrage are very profitable and sell.
