Here's a little known fact about the history of Y Combinator. The single biggest source of stress, for me at least, was not picking startups or advising them or Demo Day or even fighting with people on the startups' behalf. It was running HN. Don't start a forum.
Incidentally, very few people grasp the amount of effort Daniel Gackle expends running HN now, and what an amazing job he does.

Some of us grasp it all too well. He has had a habit of silencing some long-standing members of HN: yummyfajitas, mtgx, myself – for what seem to be inconsistent reasons. He also applies penalties that last for years, and people are too afraid to say anything.

I feel bad saying this, but when Dan retires, I'll feel relieved. It's hard to overstate just how authoritarian he is, underneath that disarming personality. He reads every comment. You can't say anything without speaking to Dan, indirectly.

An effective blind moderation system (no point-waving contests), and slow- and hellbans. If you turn on “show dead” you can see all of the trolls howling into the void, and getting zero response.

Its absolutely amazing that the quality of posts is still nearly as good as when I first joined 10 years ago. I cant think of another internet forum with that kind of success that's got HN's scale.
