How about when these nonconformist great minds align over evidence and belief? Does that then justify their dogmatic POV, even if they do become the minority? Have seen that happen in the religious realm.

I think the phrase is just used as a silly joke more often than not. Laughing at the image of paulg saying it to a friend after both suggesting pizza for lunch.
