Part of teaching one's kids to think for themselves is teaching them that they can't express all their opinions openly except to trusted friends. This is not just a feature of our time. It's been true at every point in history.

As a kid who grew up in an ex-communist country where keeping your opinions to yourself was a matter of survival, I call this a gross exaggeration coming from someone living in a free western society.
The punishment for heresies varies of course. What doesn't change (or hasn't so far) is that there are always heresies you can get punished for.

Your point was about teaching kids to hide their opinions and my point was that there are far more serious reasons for doing that in recent history than so-called cancel culture. No need to blow something marginal out of every proportion.
