Part of teaching one's kids to think for themselves is teaching them that they can't express all their opinions openly except to trusted friends. This is not just a feature of our time. It's been true at every point in history.

Why not say, be brave, but accountable? It's ok if others don't agree, or even if they decide they don't like you. Use "I've changed my mind" "I was wrong" "That's a new perspective, I'll have to think on it" frequently Another option is listen more before forming an opinion.
Besides the inconvenience of being stoned by mobs, feeling that you have to say everything you think will act as a counterpressure to original thinking. Surely you've read of cases where people kept "crazy" new ideas to themselves initially, to protect them.

I think listening more and waiting to share good ideas instead of feeling like you need to weigh in on everything is great. Just hate to see a school kid learning to CYA like a lawyer. Only thing I've seen under 18s held to account for later are sexual assaults, not ideas.

Yes, and people often dismiss as "just a joke" or "just making a point" Instead, take responsibly. Understand the weight or don't say it. Dont "play around" w/ views that have serious consequences for others. Don't carry water for bad actors / arguments or boost propaganda.
