My father was a mathematician working on the design of nuclear reactors. Before she quit to have kids, my mother was a computer, doing calculations in a bank. (The term "electronic computer" originally described a job done by humans.)

Poor and highly educated for sure. I've read a lot of autobiographies of people I admire, and it's remarkable how common this is.
