I know it's en vogue to ascribe malice or stupidity to those with whom you disagree. But the idea that the main motivation of people who signed a letter they knew would engender tremendous public backlash was to avoid being criticized on the internet is just plain silly.
To anyone with a sense of history, it would seem surprising that a letter affirming such generally accepted principles would engender any backlash at all. Which is exactly why it needed to be written.

Predictably people faced pressure to back out of it because of who else signed it. The implication is that agreeing with someone on one topic == endorsing all of that person’s positions.
