I've heard several people say that cancel culture isn't censorship, because people who get cancelled aren't prevented from speaking. This is technically correct, but only technically.

The effect (and often the intention) of cancel culture is less to silence its immediate victims than to intimidate others with similar opinions into keeping quiet. So technically, it's exemplary punishment that induces self-censorship.

I think it's a significant part of what got him elected in the first place. Not just because people on the right who were alienated by it voted for him, but also because his opponents were divided. Much if not most cancellation is the extreme left going after the moderate left.

yip, you've just explained cancel culture. It's only used pejoratively.

Absolutely. But it also can deprive them of an audience on a whim. Not because their ideas are necessarily dangerous or unpalatable but because organisations are scared the woke bullies doing the canceling will wreck their brand.

Please attach your precise definition of “cancel culture” to these kinds of tweets because otherwise it’s incredibly hard to distinguish between good- and bad-faith arguments.

Corrected and more context, otherwise it doesn't really mean anything when read in French: > Dans ce pays-ci, il est bon de tuer de temps en temps un amiral pour encourager les autres. Translates to: "In this country it can be good to kill an admiral to encourage the others"
