Is the current craziness the first example of grassroots authoritarianism and censorship in history? Normally this has to be imposed from the top down.
Interesting question. It's a matter of degree. Many uprisings have been fairly decentralized, especially at first. The French Revolution, for example.

The timing of events seems reversed now. Usually the revolution happens first, then those new in power impose their ideas on everyone. Now the censorship/imposition/cancelling is happening before any real revolution. I can't think of a previous example.

I think we need to distinguish between execution and ideation It is typically easier to decentralize the execution (pun intended) while the idea stage is more typically under control of a small group / leader Just my two fils
