I’ll never understand why people like to package “cancel culture” as censorship. Doesn’t being “cancelled” imply your ideas/opinions were heard and refuted? If you fear losing your career over your opinions, maybe they’re just that bad.
It works like censorship because if people know that if they express some opinion they'll be hounded by a mob, or lose their livelihood, or in some parts of the world even their life, they tend not to express it.

The phenomena you’re explaining sounds more like authoritarian or dictatorial rule than cancel culture. Those things are not ok. Im not so sure we can correlate it to cancel culture either. Given my various interactions on this thread I’d also say that the term is weakly defined.

I think ultimately there is some give and take here. Technology has amplified some otherwise disenfranchised people, which can hold a much more powerful group of people accountable for things they say and do. On the other hand...it can be misused, just like any other tool.
