Lots of people are saying that remote college classes at regular prices are a bad deal, and this may be true. But there is also the opportunity cost. Much, maybe most, of the value of college is in-person interactions. Every semester of remote is one semester less of those.
If my kids were college-aged and had some project they wanted to work on this year and wanted to take a leave of absence to do it, I wouldn't try to talk them out of it.

Yup, because people who build things know in the moment you build your own project / product you learn exponentially more things & faster. Even if you then go back to normal life, you’ll set yourself a different pace for exploring & learning things.
It seems like your kids get a better education being at home with you, than they would at any of these universities...

I'd have a different threshold.
Imho it is a misconception that one must choose the project before deciding to take the gap year. I have done it both ways. After my freshman year, I knew my project - an app I wanted to launch. After my second year of banking, I just quit and bought a one-way ticket to Rome.
What about if Harvard said if you take a gap year you’d have to compete for your spot again? That sounds to me a test of whether they can pull online off and how much they can charge.
