I’ve found that if a tweet of mine has lots of likes already, the likelihood of people liking it shoots up (even if they have already seen the tweet). I guess it might be some level of peer pressure to like what others like

That may be so, but almost certainly because of the same underlying dynamic- the additional sharing represents a powerful amplifier (and potential harnessing of) of the ‘likes beget likes’ behavior.
