I don't think
@paulg is saying it's a binary black/white issue. Just that there's a correlation between steps and lower mortality rates. Also, healthier body weight would be strongly correlated with steps taken.

This is was a lot of the studies on alcohol consumption didn’t adjust for. People with terminal disease tend not to be the biggest drinkers and so we got lots of messaging about a couple of glasses of wine a day having no ill effect.

If you're younger and healthier it more likely that you'll be able to walk more as compared to people who are older, no? Maybe this graph isn't the whole story.
