When I was a kid, people who hoped one day to be in politics were careful never to smoke pot. The current generation of kids will be careful never to leave any lasting record of any of their opinions.

The more naive kids may think it's safe to express opinions so long as they're energetically orthodox. But those with any sense of history know that many things that are safe to say today won't be safe to have said 20 years from now.

Or maybe all this caution will be wasted, as all our generation's caution about smoking pot was, because in 20 years people's careers will be ended for something else entirely. But for what? I can't imagine, but let's hope it's not for something even worse.

I hope there's a counter establishment to this -- that you have to have shown that you *had* opinions way back when, and that when presented with evidence your mind can change. A girl can dream...

Okay, that was pure gold. I want to live in that world so I'm gonna do my part to collectively manifest it.

In the future. we'll all be ruled by children of Silicon Valley millionaires who've been kept in isolation since early age to be ready to assume leadership positions with a "clean" record. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/26/style/silicon-valley-nannies.html …

I differ- I think cancel culture will go to extremes (getting there) and there will be a backlash...in 20 years, there will be no more cancel culture.

There has always been cancel culture. People just get canceled for different things.

if you're good enough at propaganda, your opinions from the past are not that relevant. Look at the historical words of prominent politicians including Trump, who famously grabbed women by their nether parts.

It also changes with your location; there are things that I can Tweet about here, that if go to Venezuela can get me in trouble, like, right now.

Maybe. The sense-of-history informed counterargument might be that the culture of manufactured moral panic is anomalous and will recede.
