One of the most miraculous things about our tech infrastructure is the degree to which it depends on open source software. We mostly take this for granted, but a time traveller from 1975 would be very surprised by it.

i disagree. y combinator unicorns have done considerable amount of contributions to open source by making internal projects public, and maintaining a strong community. still nowhere near google though, but no one can beat google in that.

It’s not necessarily for free and there are equivalents in other domains. Academics don’t write papers “for free”. They do it for career advancement. And these days people want to see your GitHub link as a prerequisite for certain opportunities.

Close, but I would say "needs" rather than "gets". People often do get money for work they enjoy, if so few can do it that those who can can get paid in both money and satisfaction.

Yes. A friend who works at Google told me that Wikipedia is the single most valuable source of information online, at least as measured by its contribution to successful search results.
