One of the most miraculous things about our tech infrastructure is the degree to which it depends on open source software. We mostly take this for granted, but a time traveller from 1975 would be very surprised by it.

Why would people do all this work for free? How could their efforts possibly be coordinated? How could we trust the resulting code? And yet all these problems get solved, it not perfectly, then well enough.

Do you mean the 80s? Listening to RMS and Unix people always gave me the impression 70s was more free spirited, which changed greatly during the 80s.

^this programming was a lot more co-operative before it became something that people made heaps of money off of -- at which point, it was considered that free co-operation was equivalent to "losing money"

Open-source has a great impact on economics. Open-source enabled a lot of growth, a lot of IT business exist because there is an open-source solution. Open-source enables scientific research. Open Source is free, the word free is not attached with cost factor.

When I first started most of the good software was open source. The challenge of creating good code and having your name against it was the reward. You would be surprised how much money could be made on the speaker circuit and creating software from the open source libraries.

Security software that is open source is typically more secure because of the many eyes that pour over the code identifing bugs and vulnerabilities.

In a sense, all progress is "open source." Each creator builds on what came before without permission from some central planning authority. Those who believe in central planning will never understand.

The code by its nature is open source. People have to do some legal magic to close it. Massive props to Richard Stallman for fighting for open source.
