I don’t think the reason people tried making flying machines was because we saw birds. We also tried making fission reactors even though we never saw any natural fission chain reactions. Perhaps you just lack imagination.

The Wright brothers did study birds to learn about aerodynamic principles. Nothing wrong with that. But humans also build rockets and smartphones and nuclear reactors and lots of things that never existed in any form in nature.

1) Those things were possible because of understanding of natural phenomena that we got from the the natural science that works with a systematic methodology based on evidence, so you need to carry repeatable experiments & measurements in order to prove a thesis.
