One thing I've noticed recently: being a moderate has become EXHAUSTING. It would be so much easier to join an ideological tribe.
The other issue is what happens to all the people who have genuine grievances or arguments and are willing to explain them respectfully. They get drowned out too once everything is evidence of a culture war (and are lumped in with the extreme 10% of either side).
I’m reminded of the avuncular Uncle Max who at one point in the movie “The Sound of Music" offers an embarrassed, reluctant Nazi salute and is shot a withering, scornful glance by the principled, anti-mob Captain von Trapp. Most of us think we’re von Trapp, when we’re often Max.
