Outrage is the biggest driver of what people upvote, even on HN.
I would bet a large (for me) amount that this is not true on HN. I would bet that humor is the #1 upvoted response followed by anything contrary to the other most frequent responses (hopeful when others are pessimistic or cynical when they are optimistic)
I think both things are true based on the topic. Certain topics probably invite outrage as the top priority. Otherwise, I find some topics follow the patterns you describe.
