The most important thing we can learn from Trump may be how much we were benefitting from representative rather than direct democracy. Shifting just a little closer to direct democracy, in the form of a candidate who did an end run around party bosses, has been a disaster.

This is a fallacy I see repeated over and over. Since candidates know the electoral vote is what matters, that's what they campaign for. If the popular vote mattered, the Trump campaign wouldn't have ignored California, for example.

Lots to consider in the counterfactual, and I also imagine voter participation would be higher in very blue and red states (and probably be lower in swing states)

Maybe the election would have turned out differently if it were decided by the popular vote, but your default assumption has to be that the more powerful campaign would convert its power into whatever form mattered.

The electoral college serves a purpose- highly dense urban are not representative of the US as a whole. Our Founders purposely gave us the electoral college to prevent popular vote from being deciding factor.pic.twitter.com/wvlJlFeIjl

Direct democracy doesn't need elected representatives, thats the fallacy, it merely needs technology. Of course, direct democracy might be healthier with informed citizens that care to influence the policies that govern in their jurisdiction.

It’s not a fallacy. Both your points are accurate.

The fallacy is that he would've just "campaigned differently" to pick up the popular vote. For example, earning CA means not just visiting the state, but broadening msg & constituency groups; hence policy proposals. Failure to do so believably wouldn't have earned the votes.

Silly. The same thing can be said for HRC ignoring TX. The EC causes minority voters in all but a few swing states to be ignored by both sides.
