This hadn’t occurred to me, but it’s true. “York Minster is understood to be reviewing the statue of Emperor Constantine, after it received complaints that the Roman Emperor supported slavery.” H/t ⁦@CathyYoung63⁩https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/06/29/york-minsters-roman-emperor-statue-looked-following-complaints/ …

It occurred to me when this whole thing started. Every statue of a political leader from before about 1100 is a statue of a slave owner.

Looking forward to philosophy students to realize that Aristotle argued in “Politics” that some people were natural slaves.

The sad and uncomfortable truth is: western civilization got its riches and tech advancements only thanks to colonialism and slavery. Without them capitalism wouldn't be possible. Anybody born in the first world is guilty by association. There is no point in blaming statues.

Not every leader: Ashoka, the Buddha, Mohamed, Cyrus the Great, Gregory of Nyssa, Louis X, Kangxi Emperor, Ben Franklin, William Wilberforce, Hong Xiuquan-all were outlier political leaders firmly against slavery and more progressive than contemporaries.

I think the statues are there as kind of a homage more than a recording of history. I'd say it's perfectly fine for eastern european countries to tear down every statue of Lenin, for example.

I was thinking they take down statutes of former slave owners like George Washington but is the largest monument built on the backs of slaves, wonder if they'll go after the pyramids in solidarity with slaves world wide.

Dude, I've read (some of) your essays, surely you recognize that this is not a level comparison with confederate statues that were put up in the 60's . Statues of people whose ONLY fame is their fight to keep slaves. Yes, Washington had slaves, but he did other things too.
