Try asking your kids what they're afraid of. I've tried asking both of mine at several different ages, and this always turned up things I didn't know about. Think of all the things you worried about as a kid, and never told anyone.

Great idea, how do you help them once you know the issue?
Depends on what it is. Usually the fear is mistaken, and I give them a very specific explanation why (rather than just saying "Oh don't worry.") E.g. one son at 3 or 4 worried about dogs getting into our house. I pointed out they couldn't because our doorknobs were all round.

That was in some movie where cats and dogs had secret societies that were fighting. The dogs were having a meeting where the announced that once they solve the mystery of the doorknob they take over the world.
