Try asking your kids what they're afraid of. I've tried asking both of mine at several different ages, and this always turned up things I didn't know about. Think of all the things you worried about as a kid, and never told anyone.

As a kid, when I was 9 or 10, I'm sure I had two things I was afraid of, more than everything else. A nuclear war and a failure of my home's elevator which would result in the doors opening between one floor and the other.
It is so often a mix of the genuinely frightening and comically not at all frightening. The latter type at least you can usually fix easily.
