Try asking your kids what they're afraid of. I've tried asking both of mine at several different ages, and this always turned up things I didn't know about. Think of all the things you worried about as a kid, and never told anyone.

As a kid, if there was one thing I remember being truly afraid of -- was cows. I could not fathom why a horned animal would be allowed to roam the streets freely (grew up in a small town in India). As I grew up though, things changed.
It often seems to be something to do with animals, which makes evolutionary sense.
