The median investor's first question is "who else is investing?" The reason really good investors don't ask this is not because they're more disciplined, but because averaging their opinion of you with those of other investors would decrease its accuracy.

This pattern holds through many different fields. The better you are at something, the more dangerous it is to care about conventional opinion.

Similar to how Warren Buffet never looks at the price of a stock before reading the annual report and forming his own opinion.

That’s why I didn’t copy others’ work or share my answers at school - people thought I was a stickler for the rules but really I just trusted myself more than my classmates. Seems it was a good behaviour to learn early!

If you find that you agree with conventional opinion then you are not thinking hard enough.

I think it also depends on how much you need to collaborate & scale. If you're too far away from the median, it'll be harder to bring other people into the fold. This especially applies to e.g. hiring developers.

I think it all comes down to trying to be as good as you can, in whatever areas you're focused on. That's basically the same as trying to have as good a judgement as you can, for judging your own and others' opinions.

related, dont put yourself in a position where you will be influenced by others opinion in general. your opinion needs to have no coercion, no incentives other than the truth. if its a matter of your self esteem then sit back for awhile until it isnt

I felt the same way about programming & software architecture. If I’d stick to the conventionals probably I’ll spend days with overengineered tools / frameworks. In my case, pure React is the best choice, while everyone is focusing on Redux 🤷🏻‍♂️

Which begs the question, how does one assess ones own ability objectively? Many conventional markers of ability are based on conformity.
