The worst thing with online mobs is also the best thing: they really aren’t very bright (if they were they wouldn’t be mobs). So when a mob goes after you, 99% of the time you can just ignore it, and you can be sure that it’ll have forgotten about you within 24-72hrs.

I think this is why some react to cancellation attempts by counter-punching: rather than try to dodge the mob, they attempt to shunt it toward a new target (by saying "this accuser who tried to turn you all against me is the real villain!") Seems mildly common in Youtube drama.

On one hand, this feels ugly. On the other hand, it feels like one of the few things that has created a disincentive for whipping up an outrage mob: If you try to lead the mob, you will be a public figure in the mob's valance. And that can be a very hazardous place to stand.
