same here in Yoruba culture. the artist was the ultimate craftsman and was groomed from birth. that is why in many African cultures, the artist takes his/her art so seriously, it becomes a religion

they tend to keep it in the family. If i'm a gifted sculptor, i'd expose my kids and my nephews/nieces to the art as early as possible and retain the ones who show aptitude. Works like the bronze head of Ife most likely came from expert sculptors groomed from a very early age
