And I'd bet is inversely proportional to the number of merit scholarships per major I went to a 'reasonably' selective private school for undergrad; almost everyone in the engineering & CS programs were not paying full freight

OPs point is these things don't change the fact that the perceived prestige and selectiveness of these colleges is what reinforces the class hierarchy.
