The more I think about it the more absurd the recency bias seems to me. You’ll only be able to see 0.0001% of all shows that were made, so why not make it the top 0.0001% of shows *ever made,* instead of just those that Netflix happens to have on its homepage?

because most people aren't trying to watch the best shows, they are trying to find something to talk about in common with other people
Surely this is more easily explained by people being swept along by fashion than by people consciously choosing to watch a movie they believe will be mediocre because then they'll be able to talk about it with their friends?

It's interesting question. But think hard to separate these two for most people. Because the mechanism by which they hear about shows often *is* WOM, which combines the two

And similarly, shows that aren't at liquidity of people watching tend to have lower sharing ratio too Flo's right that it is likely worth trying to change it. And clear from books we've seen that doable in sub-communities. But tend to think you're fighting against a social loop
