I wish the energy that's now being directed at knocking down statues and cancelling people could be focused on substantive change instead.https://twitter.com/justinamash/status/1276316884179333124 …

Yes Paul. Everyone who cares about the movement has focused solely on knocking down statues and cancel culture. No energy whatsoever has been directed towards elective politics, activism, or anything else that you think is important. Come on.

You utilize your platform to focus on the small few whose tactics you don’t agree with (and whose other efforts you don’t know) and respond with trivial logic?

I know about the more substantial efforts being made to fix things precisely because I am involved with many of them. That's why I wish more people would focus on them. And incidentally, showing why you're mistaken doesn't become trivial merely because one uses formal notation.

s/Everyone/Overwhelming majority. I stand formally corrected. My point doesn't change. I'd bet a lot of the people who you are frustrated with are helping in the ways that they can and have access to, and you championing your said substantial efforts would help them join you.

I already mentioned one in this same thread. (Don't be fooled by their businesslike site, which is designed to appeal to state governments rather than activists, because that's how you actually make change happen in this world.)https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1276545624729686016 …

Someone who follows you on twitter won't see that message - they see your concerns about statues, cancel culture and the "amateur revolutionaries" who you seem particularly fixated on. Also, false dichotomies aren't helpful. The mechanisms of change are multifaceted.

I've tweeted directly about Recidiviz as well. And I was tweeting about criminal justice reform long before it became the topic du jour. It has been the main focus of my domestic charitable donations for the last 5 years.

Like so many on the left, you seem to be focused on attacking people on the same side who seem to you doctrinally impure, instead of your actual enemies. That sort of attack is easy and satisfying, why it's so popular, but it's not what makes real change happen.

We’re more closely aligned than you think. The entire point I’m responding to is your frustration by those on the same side as you who you tactically disagree with. My disagreement with you is in that same vein.

That doesn’t mean that my (or as you’ve noted, your) primary focus and avenue for change is in that vein. And you have an opportunity to bring those amateur revolutionaries more in line with your tactics than I do. But it requires viewing them with more respect.
