And in addition that the people who are primly orthodox now would have been primly orthodox in the past. A thought they would hate, since past orthodoxies are so incompatible with present ones, but which is nonetheless likely to be true.

More like there's a certain kind of person who likes to be an enforcer of orthodoxy, and this kind of person will tend to become one regardless of the specific things that are considered orthodox in their time.

I think orthodoxy appeals to some who don't want to be the enforcers, but the psychology of the enforcers is particularly interesting.
