And in addition that the people who are primly orthodox now would have been primly orthodox in the past. A thought they would hate, since past orthodoxies are so incompatible with present ones, but which is nonetheless likely to be true.

I think orthodoxy appeals to some who don't want to be the enforcers, but the psychology of the enforcers is particularly interesting.
