Why would someone even say that? I don't understand why that would matter? Are they questioning whether the pandemic is a hoax?
People who say "Well, I don't know anyone who died of the coronavirus" are technically correct. Your friend who had it and didn't die infected someone else, who infected his mom, who died. So yes, you don't know the person who died. That's how epidemics work.

An explanation: people try to assess risk in primitive ways and look for someone in their tribe who got infected and died. Probably an evolutionary bug that no longer serves us in the modern hyper connected world.
