By funding pressures, do you mean simply that there's less money, or is there more too it than that?
This was a categorization of open-ended responses so there is some variation, but most people in that category said lack of resources, limited grant funding, or a decline in government or university financial support for their disciplines
From my experience working with researchers: probably not that there's less money but more of a distribution issue due to politics and favoritism + increased pressure to continuously push out content while spending 50% of the time writing proposals
In a "correctly" controlled way, private + public research could be a huge collaboration opp if done well enough
I think it depends on the field & institution. Anecdotally, corporate funding seems to drive short term research projects. (Bayer) Ex: focus on how to kill Japanese Knotweed instead of its benefits (Resveratrol, systemic endothelial support for sars-cov-2).
