I hope I'm right, but I don't expect the NYT article on Scott Alexander to be a hit piece. It's revealing that so many worry it will be, though. Few would have 10 years ago. But it's a more dangerous time for ideas now than 10 years ago, and the NYT is also less to be trusted.

Incidentally, having written that, I find myself asking: how can we make the next 10 years a less dangerous time for ideas? I don't have any answers, but I wouldn't be surprised if answers exist, so it might be worth thinking about.

Would you say his reaction was either premature or excessive? I'm not sure I would, myself, though I believe the credibility of his having setup this blog in such a way to deliberately be anonymous. If that was never an option, there might never have been a blog.

This is probably true. There'll be some positives in the article. But not enough for the article to be worth it.

Consider this sequence of events: positive article - > barrage of letters to the editor - > NYT feels compelled to tell the other side. The media is broken and we want no part of it. Their sensemaking is a joke, and they're taking the actually good sensemakers down with them.

I thought doxxing was more than just revealing their first and last name. Isn't the scope usually broader (e.g., their address, ph#, place of employment, email, photos, etc.)?

To be fair, according to Scott himself, it was never about being a hit piece. It was about doxxing in spite of expressed and valid concerns. Regardless of the article's content, this is just incredibly sad.pic.twitter.com/HZtTPY6d4Z
