I think for some products those types of details really matter and for others (like Craigslist) they don’t. I realize you’re about 1000x more experienced in this realm than me but I’m speaking as a kid who used Craigslist in college (expert)
I don't think many people will call Hacker News ugly, it's elegant.
Am working with a young maker on a new social network and we’re using HN as a design template because it does such a good job encouraging high quality posting, rather than clickbait garbage that drives ad views. Its the kind of site people would actually pay money for.
