      The biggest surprise of this pandemic, within the US, is the amount of arguing, both about the pandemic itself and about other topics. If I'd tried to imagine a pandemic beforehand, I'd have imagined everyone becoming really serious and focused. Maybe in Switzerland...

      Historians are going to have a hard time describing this period accurately, because randomness does not compress well.

          Especially as there is a tendency to read History backward, starting with an event and trying, using retrospective coherence, to explain its causes, which are usually too complex to truly understand, as every actor is an agent.

          Randomness doesn't compress, yes, but historians' job is to separate the randomness from the core. Perhaps you are saying that there is no core, and it's all randomness. Time will tell ...

          Agreed, but until recently it had been easier to find agreement about the past based on the limited information available. In the future there will be so many viable narratives for historians to construct about this period we will have many conflicting historical time lines.
