Autonomous cars should bring back that confidence in humans. It seems humans behind the wheel is just off for much confidence.

You might want to check out this book named "Happy City". Talks about how the American Dream of suburban life and private cars has made roads unfriendly for pedestrians.

If you haven't already, I would recommend reading 'The death and life of great American cities' by Jane Jacobs. It delves into how cities need to put people, and not vehicles, first.

That what you get in Amsterdam. Except for bike lanes: German tourists mindlessly strolling over them risk ending as roadkill, because bikers expect you to respect their privileges on them.

One of the issues we urban planners faced in trying to create pedestrian friendly places is that the traffic engineers were dealing with a Big O problem. Connected street systems that enable walkability couldn't be modeled in their systems in polynomial time.

Of course, we didn't know that was the blocker. Now, I'm kind of alone in that knowledge and have been trying to find a way to bridge the tech world and urban planning world. Wish me luck.
