In retrospect, the best networking advice of the past ~20 years may have actually been “learn Lisp.” Being extremely interested in somewhat esoteric but very powerful computer programming languages selected for something unique. Similar to being into “computers” in ~1970.https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1274667782639157248 …

He stayed in my house. I knew him because he emailed me about Lisp. I didn't realize he was a high school kid.

I’m trying to think of what the 2020 analog may be, and it may still be “learn Lisp.” Or maybe something more bio-related. Maybe parts of crypto *ducks*. As @cdixon says, what are the nerds doing on the weekends?

Maybe the reason Lisp was such a powerful selector was because it wasn’t easily monetizable, so it attracted people who were only interested in the thing itself. You don’t get directly paid 2x more in most cases for being a Lisp programmer. True nerds, not opportunistic nerds.

          “The Haskell paradox” maybe?

Not sure if you knew this, but the name Lambda School comes from the fact that we started teaching Haskell. If only the market size for that was >10 people.

That was from 2004, now python is the most used programing language.

Using the language of Nassim Taleb’s book Skin In The Game, Lisp programmers (and Emacs users!) have “soul in the game”
