Politics should only decide the answers to questions that can't be answered by research. If you want a heuristic for detecting extremists (on both the far left and the far right), this could be the most effective.

Who is suggesting that politics should take the lead on answering that question? I think there are hardly any policy question with a conclusive science based answer, but happy to hear examples.

Climate change is a very obvious example where the debate is not just about the best policies to combat it, but whether the scientific consensus matters or is somehow fake or wrong. And there are many other examples.
