Something I didn't realize as a kid: If you learn something that matters a lot to you, you'll surprisingly often have to teach yourself. I had to teach myself Lisp, how to write essays, and how to start a startup. I had examples to work from, but no teachers or classes.

I think it’s because you most deeply care about them in a very personal way. If you care about a problem deeply and peesonally, you find that all the advice out there is low-dimensional as it’s supposed to appeal to many.
